5 Things to Toss from your Resume

In reviewing and writing hundreds of resumes over the years, I am still surprised by some of the common mistakes I see from job seekers.

Many come to me frustrated and confused by the lack of response from desired employers. Their only strategy now has been to simply throw anything at the wall to see what sticks.

Although every job seeker’s story is different and therefore, their resume should be treated as such, here are 5 things to definitely toss from your resume…

· Complete address (city, state and zip only)

· Objective statement or generalized summary

· Reference upon request

· Irrelevant jobs, unless they fill a gap within the past 10-years

· Irrelevant or outdated skills

The key to a crafting an effective resume is first knowing what jobs you want, knowing what companies are looking for in a candidate, and aligning your content to speak to the needs and desires of the employer with the job in mind.

A resume that is too general or includes a significant amount of irrelevant experience will only distract the reader from how you can serve them the most.

Remember, that quality is more important than quality.
